I think this novel will hit home no matter who you are. The economy has been declining for as long as I’ve been paying attention, and we’ve all been affected in one way or another.

In “Recession Proof” by Kimberly S. Lin, Helen is laid off from the job she’s always hated at a financial giant, and is now left wondering what to do next. The cliché is that love will get us through anything, but poor Helen is stuck with a boyfriend she’s as enthusiastic about as she was her job. Helen and Mark have been together nearly seven years, and when they finally move in together it’s obvious they are still moving too fast.

She soon finds herself without enough money to sustain her LA lifestyle, single for the first time in years, and bedridden with depression. But her new life begins when she realizes it’s time to take her lifelong dream of becoming a writer off the shelf.

This book is so much more than the story of a girl who gets laid off and finds another job. This is a love story, full of drama, passion, best friends, romantic trips to Europe, with a few uncomfortable twists along the way like cheating, heartbreak, and death.

I became obsessed with this book from page one. Exciting, captivating – and never dull – “Recession Proof” must be paired with a wine that reminds us of the good times before the recession began, while indulging our taste-buds for the finer things as we continue to ride out the storm. Pour a glass of 2001 Châteauneuf du Pape as you dive into Helen’s world. This red is deep and silky, and steadies our nerves as we look for smoother sailing.
