Perhaps I should have started with a post about “Maneater” – something I read awhile back by the same author – but I just finished “Starter Wife” and want to gush for awhile.

“The Starter Wife” is from a few years back, but absolutely worth picking up again. The book follows the life of Gracie Polluck, née Peters, after her husband Kenny unceremoniously dumps her via Cingular wireless (remember, before it as AT&T?). She is no longer the “Wife Of” Kenny Pollock (a bad enough nickname), but something far worse: a starter wife.

The book is told through an omniscient narrator who sometimes switches between the heads of different characters. It’s mostly told from Gracie’s point of view, but let’s us peek inside the musings of the other characters. At first I thought it was annoying, but it’s actually quite fun to throw a little dramatic irony in the mix.

Get ready before you read this – there are some sad parts, but overall it’s a triumphant, hilarious, shocking story that will drag you away from everything you hold dear – or at least sleeping and eating.

Grab a glass: this book is like the sweet, surprisingly complex, always delicious Road 31 (née Green Truck – why did they have to change the name?) white wine. Like Gracie’s complex adventure takes you through emotions you haven’t felt in awhile, this wine takes you through layer after layer of crisp, bold flavors. The book goes fast, but this wine will go faster. Forget what I said earlier – you should probably try to eat something if you’re going to do this all in one sitting.

I just finished this over winter break and couldn’t put it down. Secret? I even got my boyfriend into it.  A chicklit for both genders. That’s hard to do.

PS- for those of you who also watch TV (like I do) “The Starter Wife” was turned into a mini-series and follow-up TV show that’s available on Netflix. It’s in my queue – maybe after I watch I’ll do a little blog about it. It’s not officially chicklit, but you don’t mind, do you?

PSS – I just saw on Twitter that you can win a copy of this book through another review blog – http://bookinwithbingo.blogspot.com/2011/01/happy-new-year-giveaway-start-off-with.html.

Go! Try to win!
